Google goes back and adds app permissions section on Android

Google had announced that it would whitelist apps from Google Play Store for Android on mobile and web app . However, the company disclosed that it reversed its decision.

“Privacy and transparency are core values ​​in the Android community,” said the Android developer team in some published tweets . They added: “We’ve heard your feedback that the app’s permissions section on Google Play is helpful and we’ve decided to restore it. The app permissions section will be back soon.”


Google wants to publicize the new Data Security section, providing customers with a simplified summary of an application’s data collection, processing and security practices. He also wants to highlight all necessary permissions of the app to understand its “ability to access specific data and restricted actions”.

When big tech changed the app permission section for the latest data security labels last week ahead of the July 20, 2022 enforcement deadline, this reinstatement took place, which requires developers to provide information on “how they collect and handle user data for apps they publish on Google Play”.

But, there are still several applications that have not yet included this data security section, such as Tor Browser, Discord and those from Amazon.

This system relies on developers to make “complete and accurate statements”, possibly leading to scenarios where it could be incorrect or vague. In contrast, the application whitelist is derived from the permissions declared by the developer in an application’s manifest file.

Apple has a similar policy in place for its privacy labels, which allows developers to highlight “self-reported summaries of some of its privacy practices,” a method that, as a report by The Washington Post puts it , “falls short of being helpful.” ”.

Finally, Google states that it can take appropriate enforcement action if there are cases where there is a discrepancy between the application’s behavior and its statement.
