Fans of South Korean manufacturer Samsung are speculating that the company is developing a 450-megapixel (MP) camera sensor, based on an application for registration of the “Hexapixel” trademark seen with the competent bodies in South Korea and some European countries. .
It is worth remembering, at this point, that the documentation itself makes no mention of the nature of this product: nothing in the paperwork mentions “camera” or “sensor”, so even though the South Korean company has a history of developing this product, all this rumor is centered on fan speculation.

However, attention should be paid to the name of the requested brand: “Hexapixel” has been understood as a successor to “Tetra2Pixel”, Samsung’s image processing technology for its ISOCELL HP1 sensor, which has 200 MP of resolution.
Basically, this sensor can transition between 200 MP and 50 MP with pixel binning (basically, the grouping of data from an image) with 2×2 or 4×4 pixel frames. According to the documentation seen by fans, the “Hexapixel” does the same, except that it raises this capacity to 6×6 pixels – in practice, this would give the sensor 450 MP of resolution.
It is important to note that, even if this theory proves to be true, it is unlikely that Samsung will implement it in a commercial product, such as its smartphones : what the company has currently developed in this area – including the aforementioned ISOCELL HP1 – never appeared in anything that was not of a factory nature. In other words: large industrial projects, for example.
However, technology companies are known for creating new technologies simply to push the limits of certain products – which, in the future, could lead to miniaturized versions of a great discovery. All we can do is wait.
