Sony confirms PS VR games won’t be compatible with new PS VR2

O PS VR2 scheduled for release early next year, and Sony is already starting to ramp up the hype around its next-generation VR headset. The hardware debuted at the Tokyo Game Show last week and first impressions were positive. In addition, the company revealed several more games that will appear on the platform during Game state on Tuesday. But nothing is perfect: games PS VR will not work on PS VR2.

In the latest edition of the Official PlayStation Podcast, PlayStation Senior Vice President of Platform Operations stated:

“PS VR games are not compatible with PS VR2 because PS VR2 is designed to deliver the next generation of VR experience… PS VR2 has much more advanced features such as a brand new controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, tracking from inside out . , eye-tracking, 3D audio and, of course, 4K HDR. This means that developing games for PS VR2 requires a completely different approach than for the original PS VR.”

Even the latest games won’t come to PS VR2

Despite this, some games that work on PS VR have been confirmed for PS VR2 as No Man’s Sky, but games are still missing. This means players will not be able to access PS VR games from the new headset.

It also appears that games new to PlayStation VR won’t be compatible with PS VR2, such as Astro Bot Rescue Mission or Moss, unless the developers port their games to PS VR2. Of course, a more limited library of games might make a new headset a less attractive purchase.

The solution may have something to do with PS VR2 using tracking methods. The commands and controls are completely different. PS VR uses the PlayStation Camera and light-based tracking, while Sony tracks the position of the new Sense controllers using an infrared LED.
